Urban sanitation strategies in African cities
The training course in detail
Overall theme and context
The development of an urban area can be irreversibly harmed by poorly designed infrastructure, infrastructure that fails after several decades, and planning schemes that do not take into account the urban, environmental, economic, social, and even anthropological challenges. This is particularly true when it comes to wastewater treatment (collective or individual), a service that is often under-considered when it comes to urban planning. Rethinking strategies, infrastructure projects, and governance in the sanitation sector is all the more crucial because the environmental and social impacts can be irreversible.
Learning objectives
- To understand the systemic issues and integrate the transformational challenges for African cities in the 21st century.
- To learn how energy, digital, environmental, and social innovations can improve strategic sanitation choices and projects.
- To clarify strategic visions and adapt sanitation policies.
- To win support for a project by inspiring people, telling a compelling story, and adopting suitable approaches.
- To support change within participants’ organisations and ecosystems.
Teaching and activities
This training course has been designed as a transformation process to support sanitation leaders in French-speaking Africa as they create new strategies for their regions. It involves two weeks of preparation to create the learning community, understand the complexity of urban issues, and identify the expertise (interpersonal skills) to be strengthened in order to generate support for change. This will be followed by a two-week-long learning trip to Marseille, Sète and Marseillan that will feature immersions in projects, meetings with stakeholders, serious games, mentoring, and role-playing through case studies.
