Theatre and Development in Africa programme

The training course in detail

Overall theme and context

The benefits of theatre are numerous and far-reaching. Beyond its artistic function, it plays a key role in how we see and perceive our societies. In many places, theatre can crystallise social issues. It brings together audiences and artists in shared spaces for social interaction and creative expression while acting as a source of dialogue and community cohesion. An heir to the oral tradition that is deeply rooted throughout the continent, African theatre is a vibrant body of artistic forms but also a legacy of colonisation and a part of the current history of French, English, and Portuguese-language theatre. Contemporary African theatre is showing tremendous vitality, particularly in terms of writing, but there is still little structure: companies and cultural stakeholders are isolated and there is a lack of international communication about African theatrical productions.
This series of videos is aimed at theatre professionals in French-speaking Africa and Europe. It offers an overview of the rich history of theatre-making in Africa and deciphers the challenges facing this constantly evolving art form.
